Answer to submitter. Time to re -evaluate Hans Rosling as a folk educator

It receives to criticize a deceased person. But Hans Rosling’s role as a popular educator must be called into question.

As pointed out in a previous post The impact was largely due to the fact that « unpleasant » truths (climate, resource assets and land destruction and more) could hardly be accommodated in Rosling’s sessions. Particularly misleading was his theories that the continued large increase in the world population would soon resolve itself through increased welfare, education and resource access in the « poor » countries. This is without taking into account that these countries are and become the most affected by the rampant climate change and its effects.

An obvious weakness in the arguments was that the increase in population decreased – as a percentage rate! The facts were – and is – that the population increase is as great as ever in absolute terms – about 80 million more per year. With his study background in, among other things, statistics, he should understand that the globe and its sea and nature cannot count on percent but only actual, quantitative impact.

Rosling’s simplified reasoning was also reinforced by the stand-like performances for which he was applauded. In my eyes more like Ian and Bert’s stacking boxes. The result was usually just a simplified worldview and an unjustified rose -red picture of the state of things.

But certainly the researchers and research need to reach better. Hopefully not through corrected truths like Rosling, but through clear, educational, serious warnings about the increasing crisis situation in our world.

There is really a need for a factual counter -fire against our government’s populist and misleading co -operation of different voter groups. A tendency that has not yet achieved the Trump administration’s clear denial of climate development and other research-based facts, but which is clearly on the way.

So – researchers, Stand on you, but not with Rosling’s methods.
