Answer to submitter. Test to treat the Palestinians as human beings
Staffan Eriksson advocates that the Swedish government should withdraw the recognition of Palestine as a state in order to maintain a common line with the EU. This is likely to be interpreted as the EU officially not recognizing Palestine as a state and therefore Sweden should not.
The question, however, is how it is intended that it can be peace and a two -state solution if we do not recognize Palestine as a state and their right to exist, but focus solely on Israel’s right to exist. Another problem is to assume that a two -state solution is only possible on the terms of Israel, which in principle does the negotiations that Eriksson writes about meaningless. If Israel only agrees to a two -state solution if they get eastern Jerusalem, Gaza, Jenin and the West Bank, what will it remain for the Palestinians?
Eriksson also defends Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza by blaming Hamas hiding among civilians. Here you could ask how it might be okay to kill civilians just because a terrorist may be hiding among these civilians. Imagine that a police officer would kill some 50 civilians because a killer hid in the same room as the civilians. Would we then accept this and even defend the police? It is hardly likely, but that is exactly what Eriksson does when he defends the Israeli army IDF’s killing of civilians.
He ends Then claiming that Egypt refuses to receive refugees from Gaza for not wanting to receive militant and radicalized groups. But the reason why Egypt does not receive refugees is in fact that they do not want to help Israel with the ethnic cleansing that Israel wants to perform in Gaza.
The problem with constantly talking about radicalized Palestinians and ignoring radicalized, violent Israeli settlers as well as Israel’s unwillingness to recognize Palestine is that it only leads to continued violence. Israel has done everything to crush Hamas by bombing buildings, killed tens of thousands of civilians, built new illegal settlements, arrested and terrorized the Palestinian population.
Israel has even made a decision that has meant that parts of Gaza’s population have starved. Israel has destroyed the Gazaborn’s opportunity for a future. The only thing Israel has not ever tried to achieve peace is to treat the Palestinians as human beings.
Israel has not recognized Those as people, not considered letting them get their own country. Not for a moment, thought that people who have a life, a hope for the future, a dream, will not become terrorists. Despite all the bombing and killing, Israel is not closer to now than when the war started to crush Hamas.
For once, it might be time to try to treat the Palestinians as human beings and see how it works. What do they have to lose?
