Answer to submitter. Right to export cheap electricity even if it sounds wrong
On the night of May 15, Sweden exported electricity to Finland despite the fact that the electricity in our eastern neighbor was cheaper than free. There were so -called minus prices on electricity there. At the same time, the price of electricity in Stockholm and in electricity area 3 was higher than usual.
This got Tomas Stephanson to write the submitter with the headline « Today Pomperipossa moved into the Swedish electrical system » in DN.
Should it be like this? he asked. And I can understand that he is wondering, because it sounds wrong. In a market, the electricity should be sold where you get paid best for it. Not the other way around.
But there is actually Occasions when electricity goes from an area where the electricity is more expensive to one where it is cheaper. But it only happens when it is more socio -economically advantageous for the entire electricity market than the alternative.
In this case, exports of electricity to Finland meant that the network was relieved and made it possible to transfer/export more hydropower/electricity from northern Sweden south, than would otherwise have been possible. And it favored consumers there.
In addition, it enabled more electricity from the hydropower in the north could be used than otherwise when you got to « wash » electricity by just letting water run past the turbines in the power plants.
So on Stephanson’s question If it is to be like this, my answer is yes, even if it intuitively sounds wrong.
