Answer to submitter. Research makes no use in the drawer
It is gratifying that research communication arouses many people’s commitment! The Swedish Research Council is responsible for coordinating communication in Sweden. We work long -term to make research use in society and promote dialogue and collaboration between researchers, other community actors and the public.
But as the communications adviser Andrea Hartmann Jovell And several researchers pointed out, researchers often lack both support and education in communicating. Communication training is rarely part of postgraduate education, although several educational institutions offer courses and coaching in communication. In the Swedish Research Council’s report « Framework for courses in research communication » From 2021, we therefore make concrete recommendations on how researchers at the beginning of their careers can be better equipped to share their knowledge.
Research’s valuation and reward systems also need to be broadened, says Researcher Jessica Lindvall. Such work has been going on for several years, in Sweden and globally. More than 700 organizations, including the Swedish Research Council, have joined Coara (Coara for the Advancement of Research Assessment) and together develop methods to be able to evaluate other than researchers’ scientific publications.
About researchers’ votes Should be stronger in the public debate, channels must be opened for it, claims Researcher Johan Hegardt. The Swedish Research Council runs just such a channel: research.sewhich gathers and explains new Swedish research. There is also a service for journalists who need help finding current research or a certain researcher.
Research -based knowledge should be easy to reach and understand. In this way, we can strengthen a democratic society and enable a wiser world.
