Answer to submitter. Reduced consumption of meat and milk is more important than food waste
Anita Lundström, administrator at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and author of the report « Environmental impact of food waste in Sweden », writes I an answer on My submitter: « The weight of the food thrown (…) is a way to measure food waste and food waste with reasonable efforts at national level. » She ends her text with the call not to throw food.
We agree that the weight is a way to measure food waste with reasonable efforts. My point was just that it is an extremely bad way to mix carrots and beef when it is beef and dairy products that are the problem.
It is directly misleading. In support of this my opinion I have the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s own words from A fresh press release It states: “Meat is food, whose food waste causes the greatest climate impact in all food levels. This applies even if it is not meat that accounts for the largest amount of waste. In households, among other things, it is fruit and vegetable that accounts for the clearly largest amount of waste. It is thrown three times as much fruit and green. for other food categories. «
It was nice. I wonder when I read this why Anita Lundström even replicated on my submitter.
The curse of environmental policy is that it is so easy for scammers to catch the public, speak and get journalists’ attention with misleading maneuvers. Instead of focusing on what should be the goal of a rational and based environmental policy like this in Klimatapocalyp’s era – namely to build a consumption -based perspective on the car, the steak and the home – we hear a lot of oddities. To these unscientific oddities, I count suggestions on organic food, food waste, bike lanes, microplastics, non -toxic everyday life, locally produced food and so on. The list never seems to end.
As is well known, it is not possible to convince someone who does not want to understand or whose income depends on he does not understand. Already in 2016 a couple of Chalmers researchers dismissed on the super -environment blog The debate on food waste by stating: « Although we would halve food waste, which would be an ambitious goal, would not reduce by more than about 5 percent. »
The important thing is to reduce the consumption of beef, lamb and dairy products.
