Answer to submitter. Organize conferences with researchers open to the public
Miakel Jonsson at the Swedish Research Council lifts in an answer On, among other things My post The website research.se, a resource that is unfortunately unknown to me and certainly many other researchers. Together, we should consider how resources like this can be used by more and if more platforms are needed.
Jonsson mentions that for several years there is a work in the context of international cooperation Coara, if the ambition is to broaden the merit system. Excellent, but it goes too slowly. I know, because I’m involved myself.
Change takes time. But unfinanced change work takes many times longer than financed. And within the unfinanced work today, the implementation of open science is located, where the Coara work is done.
Open science is a work that is often non-merit with academic dimensions. As a researcher, translating the complexity of research into something that is understandable and relevant to a wider audience should be heavier merit than it is today.
However, I do not want to undermine the work already done by the Swedish Research Council, HEIs and by driven researchers. But we need stronger incentives and more financing opportunities.
« The third task », together with open science, requires us to make science more accessible, transparent and relevant. Encouraging this is an important step to promote open science more. This makes research more easily accessible, understandable and useful for a wider audience – which is also a core value in open science.
I urge Therefore, the Swedish Research Council that:
● Create new financing opportunities aimed at the « third task » and open science.
● Activate support programs for education in research communication and open science.
● Encourage, and perhaps themselves organizing, conferences and seminars that promote the exchange between the public and the research society.
To our Swedish universities Do I want to do the following:
● Before open science and the « third task » in postgraduate education so that future experts are well -informed about the importance of making their knowledge easily accessible and relevant outside their bubble.
● Lift in university employment collaboration as a heavier credit than, for example, the number of research publications – when the role may require this.
● Implement the Coara work within the university and institutions.
