Answer to submitter. Let the exercisers take their own responsibility
IN a submitter in DN it is proposed that participants in long -distance races should be forced to present medical certificates to participate. It may sound reasonable in theory – we all want to avoid tragedies. But in practice it would be a big step in the wrong direction.
First, the vast majority of people who sign up for that kind of race have been training for a long time, planned carefully and know their own body best. Putting a general requirement for medical certificates for tens of thousands of participants in exercise races around the country would not only be logistically unreasonable – it would also undermine the individual’s responsibility and ability to make wise choices.
Secondly, the proposal risks contributing to a development where control and surveillance replace trust. Should we demand medical certificates for mountain hiking, to cycle to work or to participate in a dance competition? Living is to take risks – small and great – but trying to regulate them all is not only impossible but deeply unpleasant.
Let us instead Protecting a culture where adults take responsibility for their own decisions. Information efforts, clear risk descriptions and good access to healthcare before and during the race go a long way.
But to demand medical certificates to run a marathon? No, thanks. I would rather take responsibility than a certificate.
