Answer to submitter. A liberal prime minister can lead Sweden away from populism
In the days it has both On the submitter side and The debate page Ideas were presented to merge the Liberals and the Center Party. At first glance, it may look like a logical consequence of the Center Party’s shift from an « agrarch conservative » party to a liberal, or almost neo -liberal, party. The Liberals are sometimes more of a social liberal party than a neoliberal, but it might be possible to join.
The Center Party has deservedly kept the liberal banner high in national politics in recent years by defending the right to asylum and by distance from liberalism’s main opponents in the form of the national conservative authoritarian party. One can assume that the people with national conservative ideology who once populated the center movement nowadays do not remain. In these respects, the Liberals have succeeded worse in actually being liberal with the cooperation with SD and the current government’s asylum policy.
Today, climate should be one of the most important issues for all parties, which both these parties seem to be able to sign. But at the same time, they have both failed fundamentally in climate work.
The Liberals are The government’s representatives of climate policy and defend a policy that is not climate -friendly. The government does not even succeed in its nuclear power policy because it is not seen the potential of nuclear power; To end the impact of energy supply on life in nature. Nuclear power could be the key to reducing both greenhouse gas emissions and removing exploitation pressure from the industrialization of energy production on our forest and agricultural lands, our watercourses and our « good wind positions ».
In the end, we could restore nature if we take our energy from nuclear power. In addition, if we charge the new nuclear power with already used waste, we would drastically reduce the amount of waste. The People’s Party was once the Environmental Party’s party and could continue to be if you run your line all the way out and challenge the environmental party as the choice of intellectual environmentalists.
While the Liberals do not realize the full potential of their own politics, the Center Party has made the politics of the burnt earth. You want to appear as a climate -friendly party, but do not realize how biofuels from the forest contribute carbon dioxide in the same way as fossil fuels. You are pleased to exploit soil and forest without much climate benefit, but with disastrous effects on biodiversity.
Furthermore, the Center Party is Positive to exploiting more or less all of our country with wind power, a power that threatens already threatened species such as eagles and other large birds, and which is not enough as energy supply when swinging mass and predictability are lacking. Furthermore, the Center Party does not want to recognize the dark back of hydropower in the form of loss of biodiversity and population. This, as opposed to the People’s Party, which pushed to save the last rivers once in a while.
In order for a merger to be possible, the Liberals must become liberal again and that the Center Party becomes the green party they claim to be. If this does not happen, the risk is imminent that both parties will continue to lose relevance and disappear, merged or each individually. If, on the other hand, the new party or the current one goes to elections on their own policy and negotiate the government issue after the election, then they can both stay relevant. But we probably want to know even before the election if there is a limit to government cooperation with the two parties that originate in totalitarian ideologies. This is crucial for every liberal.
A liberal party with self -confidence and clearly liberal expression on issues of the individual’s freedom and opportunities can look west at Canada and claim that liberalism is important. A liberal prime minister with social democratic and moderate support, either in coalition or as support parties, could lead Sweden away from national conservatism and populism against better climate policy, strong support to Ukraine and other countries that come under the pressure of the empires and a Sweden where everyone can be included.
