Another step towards solidarity: Ukrainian cynologists are trained in Lithuania
Ukrainian cynologists from Mariupol, Odessa and Torack are training in Kaunas – they learn here with their dogs. Lithuanian specialists teach you how to prepare service dogs to look for mines, people and rescue them.
« Our main activities are protection, fire prevention, work with weaponry, finding people and miners. As the war began, life and attitude towards neighbors have changed. We realized what the real enemy is, » said Pavel Adamenko, a cynologist from Ukraine.
Cynologists from cities occupied by the Russians or so demolished that it is no longer possible to live there came to Kaunas. Nevertheless, people are still trying to survive, and one of their most important tasks is work in prisons and prison prisoners.
« Dog training is usually done, we are learning from the front. We also participate in the supervision of prisoners of war, which becomes an important part of learning, » Adamenko said.

Ukrainians say that many cynologists have lost during the war – over 700 are now at war and about 40 are killed. Therefore, new, trained professionals are constantly needed. Lithuania comes here – cynologists are learning about vital tasks in Kaunas.
« We teach their cynologists, there are standards throughout Europe, and they want to move to European. Our task is to introduce them to all services, » said Vytautas Gustaitis, founder of the Baltic Cynology Center.
Such dogs need to be specially trained so that no sounds – shots, explosions, firecrackers.
« We get used to the dogs not to be afraid of shots – a person with a pistol retreats, shoots and observes the dog’s reaction. If the dog is not scared, we approach and encourage him for calm behavior. He gets used to it and no longer fear.
Such trained dogs often help save more than one life.
« Dogs focus on smell and trace. In the war they are especially important, helping people to look for people under the ruins. We are currently doing such search work. Without dogs, it would be very difficult – they save lives. Today, the dog is like another weapon against the enemy, » Savchenko explained.
The most difficult is the animals working in prisons.
« A lot of victims, both people, dogs and service dogs. Because they blasted, they hit prisons, where people and dogs also lived.

Dogs are constantly lacking in food, and they are often sent to Lithuanians.
« It is distributed to all the prisons because they have many because they have over 2,000 dogs. Imagine what quantities, how to provide, » said the founder of the Baltic Cynology Center.
In addition to the dogs of service cynologists, Lithuanians also save many other animals from Ukraine. One organization sometimes takes up to 3 thousand. animals.
« Animals are really suffering, volunteers are constantly asking for help, a lot of animals. Many of them take them from evacuated territories, because people are able to leave, but animals remain tied to chains, remain in roller coats or close at home, » said Nuaro manager Jurgita Gustaitienė.
Saved animals brought to Lithuania amaze professionals with their behavior.
« From the shooting zone, long starving, so the animals always respond differently to any other movement. But I can say that it is surprising that those animals, whether they were born or long without human, are very confident in man. None of the animals showed aggression. »
J. Gustaitienė said that they still collect empty dog food cans that turn into candles and send to Ukraine trenches. And animals in Ukraine are most lacking in dry food.
