Animal lovers accuse the shelter of killing animals for no reason

The group of animal lovers shelters Meli Center Repca in the municipality of Trebnje accuses irregularities in the care and broadcast of animals, and therefore prepared a smaller protest rally on Saturday before the center. At the shelter, they reject the allegations and emphasize that they do not know the legislation in the group. So far, the Inspectorate has not detected irregularities in the operation of the shelter.

They cite the execution of the Lord dog, which was deprived of the owners due to neglect, as a concrete example. « His execution was completely unnecessary, since he had no other health or behavioral problems except his injured paw, there was also an interest in adopting, » she said Milenka Sahernik from a group of animal lovers. The shelter in this, as well as other cases, accuses arrogant communication and direct information about the dog.

The majority of the shelter owner Dušan Hajdinjak He rejects the allegations. He emphasizes that the shelter does not kill any dog, since under the legislation it no longer has the opportunity to decide which dog will be killed. Also, the dog is always executed by a veterinarian, and not a shelter.

“So we didn't kill our dog. All we did was transported from one point to another, that is, from removal to the veterinarian, and then the inspector and the veterinarian decided to kill. In between, it was only one night installed with us, « he said. Regarding the direct information about the dog, he said that unauthorized persons should not be given information. « We have a municipal concession and we have to adhere to the legislation, » he said.

It also rejects allegations that animals are not adopted, although they have adopters. He says, on social networks and in the newspaper, they regularly publish animal ads and also submit them if there is an interest in it.

At the Inspectorate for Food, Veterinary and Plant Protection, they said that three regular controls had been carried out at the Mela Center since 2022. The last one was carried out in April last year, and irregularities in the operation of the shelter were not identified. The shelter also regularly performs the necessary maintenance work and upgrades, they said.

The municipality of Trebnje, which has a concession contract concluded by April 2027 with a shelter, has not detected irregularities in its functioning and handling of animals. « Occasionally, we get a letter with allegations of a shelter work, but most often these are matters for which the municipality is not competent and are under the auspices of the inspectorate, » said the mayor Mateja Povhe.

The municipality covers the supply of abandoned animals from its budget. In doing so, the care costs are calculated for each animal specifically based on an account, which is submitted by the concessionaire with all the necessary documents and photographs of the animals. The municipality also occasionally verifies that the reporters have actually been carried out by the reporters, but does not detect irregularities, the mayor said.
