Andriy Portnov, gray eminence of the Ianoukovitch era in Ukraine, shot in Spain – Liberation
On Wednesday morning, shots burst in Pozuelo de Alarcón, a posh suburb of Madrid. It is 9:15 am when a call to 112 indicates that a man lies on the ground, in front of the American school. Spanish police arrive and discover the body of a Ukrainian citizen, Andriy Portnov, who had just dropped one of his children at school. The Ukrainian did not have time to leave that he was suffering from five bullets, head and back. His attackers – two or three in number according to sources – managed to flee. At the end of the morning, the information, propagated by press agencies, spreads like a trail of powder in Kyiv, where it resonates like a political blast.
Like the shouting echo of a past rising to the surface. Without people like Portnov, the recent history of Ukraine could have taken a different course … Professional lawyer, born in Louhansk in 1973, Andriy Portnov is one of those small fish that have become large in troubled waters of the first years of independence, navigating skillfully between state administration and privatized companies.
