Anders Svensson: What does the word « grisch » mean?

Milk is anything but consistent

The word milk Used both for fluid from teats and as a short shape for « milk juice ». When did you start using this dual meaning? What does the history look like about other uses of the word? Coconut milk is accepted, but for example Oat milk and Soy milk has become controversial, despite identical appearance and origin. Why?

Martin

Response: Very reasonable question. In December 2013, the EU introduced a regulatory framework that says, for example milkThe butterThe cheeseThe cream and yoghurt Only may be used to market products made from animal milk. But there are exceptions. Coconut milk For example, is allowed as well as peanut butter and Almond milk.

You have to dig deeper into the trademark legislation to leg out the details, but I suspect it is either about claimed (that is Coconut milk been accepted as a product designation since far back) or that the ban more applies to products that clearly compete in the same product area as dairy products. But the application does not seem to be completely consistent.

An subdivision to this question cluster applies to the designations milk respective Milk drinkwhere only milk that does not have additives (such as vitamin D) or otherwise undergone any changes may be called milk. Neither is the application consistent.

Swedish dictionary indicates for the word milk The sub -meaning « milk -like plant juice; coconut milk » and « nutritious liquid extracted from plant parts and the like; hazelnut milk, oatmeal, almond milk, rice milk ». The same division of meaning is given in the historical Swedish Academy’s dictionary, and there are examples of this use from the 17th century onwards.

If one a little jokingly uses the expression My offspring about their/their children, what is correct then: My offspring Even if several, or My offspring (plural)?
