A few hours after the request, we received a response from the tax-soil department. In our letter to MTA, we, together with readers, were interested in: how many euros can actually be transported now through the Estonian-Russian border?
In social groups, it was stated that it is impossible to have paper bills at all, but coins – up to 50 euros. Very different data were given in relation to fines.
And the fact that they are, no one has already subjected to doubt – even if the rules are violated uninhabited.

The commentary of Voldemara is Linno, the head of the customs control department of the Estonian customs service.

“From 04.27.2025, the tax and soil department is granted the right to consider violations of sanctions as misconduct in cases where the violation is slight. The amendment provides that an attempt to make an misconduct is also punishable as misconduct, that is, the situation when crossing the border has not yet occurred, but the basis for punishment for misconduct has already arisen.

In this regard, we would like to note that it is forbidden to transport sanctions and cash across the border. We will consider each case separately, but if a violation is revealed, we will initiate a misconduct. The proceedings on the misconduct can be instituted if the person has committed an act by negligence. This means that various versions of forgetting cash in your pocket are no longer sufficient to avoid responsibility.

Coins are also money that apply to the same restrictions as for paper money. The maximum possible penalty for transporting cash across the border is up to 2400 euros, but all cases and their circumstances are evaluated each time separately.

Violation of sanctions was also punished earlier. This was a criminal offense, but depending on the case, the persons were given the opportunity to cross the border without goods or they were sent back from the border with the goods. We believe that the opportunity created by the legislator – to apply procedures for misconduct in case of minor violations – is very important for the effective execution of sanctions that have been operating for several years. Violations of sanctions, in which the cost of goods and cash is 10,000 euros or more are still considered a criminal offense.
