Women in the Macedonian Revolutionary Movement from the Project and Ilinden Period (9)
Many events and revolutionaries have been known in Macedonian history that have left a strong mark in the fighting for the liberation of Macedonia. However, what is not well known is that these struggles included more Macedonians, who also contributed to the revolutionary work with their works and actions. Around them were knitted stories, myths and legends were built, and their biographies look like true novels, which seem to be produced by the greatest fantasies of the writers. These women fought breasts in their breasts with the enemy, sewing insurgent flags, performing courier tasks, conveying weapons and ammunition,
hid them and healed them
Macedonian revolutionaries. Their revolutionary engagement was told by contemporaries, and among
The people were known as the « Komitsi ».

Here’s a mother who entered the Macedonian revolutionary movement thanks to her sons, Christo, Andon and Angel Uzunovi. A mother, who had to be pleased to be in second place, just after the mother who gave her an advantage: Macedonia.
Anastasia Uzunova comes from old gender and father. She was born in the family of Georgi and Agnia Chakrovi (Shakarov) in Struga. Her father was a comrade of Dimitrija Miladinov and was arrested during the death of Dimitrija and Constantine, but was soon released. Georgi had more children, all prominent revolutionaries, teachers and intellectuals: Alexander, Stanislav, Ivan, Slavka, who later took the surname Puskarova, after her husband Nikola, and Anastasia. She is the first cousin of the revolutionaries Christo and Milan Matovi.
She was married to Dimitar Uzunov, after which she took the surname of her husband Dimitar, and is known as Uzunova. Dimitar Uzunov was a well -known social socialist who was a teacher in several Macedonian cities: Kukush, Ohrid, Bitola, etc. He also wrote for several newspapers on topics related to education and church: « Macedonia », « Napredok », « Law ». His brother Konstantin Uzunov died in Russia during his schooling there in 1860. And her husband Dimitar, born 1842, died under unclear circumstances relatively young at the age of 45, in 1887. She was left alone to worry and raise her children in a revolutionary spirit.
Anastasia and Dimitar, as mentioned at the beginning, had three children: Christ, Andon and Angel Uzunovi, all revolutionaries. Only angel suffered old age, the other two died early in fighting with the Turkish army. The Macedonian Revolutionary Organization involved as the main organizer of women in Ohrid. Some believe that she was the first Ohrid woman to enter the organization. However, it is undeniable for her commitment to forming female companies that assisted the work of the revolutionaries. The son of Christ attended the sworn in the squad of Tale Goranov as a representative of the women’s revolutionary group from Ohrid. After the death of the two sons, she emigrated to Bulgaria, along with the remaining son Angel. There she died in 1948.
The first to kill Andon, during the Ilinden Uprising. In the great battle on August 31, 1903, at the village of Kuratica, Ohrid, 27 Macedonian revolutionaries were killed, including Angel. After two years of similar fate, the eldest son of Christ was experienced around which a myth of an unwavering revolutionary was built, who consciously put « head in a bag ». In short, the chronology of Hristo Uzunov’s death indicates that during his stay as commander in the village of Cher, Kichevo was betrayed, the village was surrounded by the army, not wanting to surrender or fall into the hands of the enemy, after spending all the bullets. This bloody episode left a strong impression on contemporaries. Soon songs began to sing and tell legends about the brave duke.
Anastasia had to endure the death of the two sons. Especially that the following letter of Christ sent to her was stated: “My dear mother, I am your first son and my debt is to be around you, so as not to feel the need. Can I, when I feel the pains of our tormented homeland, I will not give in love with the most faithful son of her sacred work? I will feel, if you with your posture you are for an example for other mothers and wives. «
Christ and in another letter, this time addressed to his comrades, again mentioned his mother: « I beg especially to greet my kind mother, which I have never forgotten, because she made me like this. Let her apologize for me that I was not happy with me. Greet their relatives as well. «
A letter to Anastasia was also sent by the Ohrid management body. « The difficult loss you are suffering this time is also our loss … Let the Supreme Comfort in these heavy and angry minutes, » they wrote, among other things.
What should Anastasia do at those moments? And what left her, except to tighten her teeth and try to reconcile with losses. Care and attention were dedicated to all the passed fighters, who in every way tried to preserve her from new pain, caring for her and her son Angel, who had just entered adulthood. And maybe his age has prevented the possible tragedy and the youngest of his sons to die in the fighting.
Even after many decades later, in 1941, the survivors of the Ilindens again respected the pages of the Ilinden Magazine, addressing her with the words: « You, the mother of heroes, be convinced that in the footsteps of Christ all heroic Macedonia. Despite all the accidents, she remained firm, so the people recognized and immortalized her with honorary titles as a respected woman, the mother of all Macedonian revolutionaries.
