An overlooked habit cost the box
« It is a simple routine that can be seen both on the electricity bill and help to extend the life of the technique. It is about making it a permanent habit every early summer, » says Bo Halm Andersen, energy consultant and construction expert at NRGi.
The circulation pump ensures that the hot water from the heating system runs around to the radiators. When there is no need for heating, the pump continues to drive in many homes all summer without benefiting.
Bo Halm Andersen, energy consultant and construction expert at NRGi, would like to draw attention to this. He advises daily homeowners on energy consumption and points out that many can save energy and money by turning off the pump during the hot months.
« Many people mistakenly believe that it is enough to turn down the heat or turn off the heating system, but forget that the circulation pump is moving on in the background. It is equivalent to leaving the car idle all summer. It costs power and wears unnecessarily on the pump – and it can all be avoided with a push of a button, » explains Bo Halm Andersen.
A simple summer check can save money
It only takes five minutes to properly shut off the heating system. And according to SparEnergi, you can save 2-3 % of the annual heat consumption-equivalent to DKK 200-800 depending on the heat form-just by turning off the system and circulation pump during the summer months.
« It’s a simple routine that can be seen both on the electricity bill and help extend the life of the technique. It’s about making it a permanent habit every early summer, » says Bo Halm Andersen.
Summer closure of the heating system can typically be done in the period from May to October, depending on the weather and the individual heat needs of the home. It is a simple but effective way to maintain your heating system while saving energy during the hot months.
Also remember the radiators when you close the heating system
In addition to putting the heating system on the summer break and turning off the circulation pump, there is another step that you can take advantage: turning the radiators’ thermostats all the way up and down a few times over the summer.
That explains Bo Halm Andersen.
« Although the heat is off, you should turn the thermostat valves from completely closed to completely open and back again – and preferably a few times during the summer. It keeps the mechanism going and prevents the valve from getting stuck. It helps to ensure that your radiators are ready when the firing season begins again. »
Checklist for the summer closure of the heating system
According to Bo Halm Andersen, you can follow these three steps when you make your heating system ready for the summer:
-
Close the heating system or put it on summer operation if it has that function
-
Turn off the circulation pump
-
Turn the radiators’ thermostats from closed to open and back again a few times over the summer
