An agreement on a new nursing home in Akureyri

A new 80 -space nursing home will rise at Thursaholt 2 in Akureyri. Inga Sæland, Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, and Ásthildur Sturludóttir, mayor of Akureyri, signed an agreement today and examined the construction site together with representatives from the local council, the elders and the board of the senior citizens of Akureyri.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and the nursing home can be used at the end of 2028.

« I am very pleased that a new nursing home will rise in Akureyri and congratulate Akureyri.

« It is gratifying to see this important project will be realized in good cooperation with the state. The construction of a new nursing home is a great progress step for Akureyri and it is important for all the townspeople – not least the older people and their relatives.

Improved service to older people

According to a press release, Akureyri town will provide the state plot and will soon be advertised by a party to build the nursing home. The state will then rent the house with a lease for 20-30 years.

Thursholt is considered a suitable location where infrastructure is already available and Akureyri town will therefore also deliver a plot of land at Thursholt 4-12 for the construction of apartments and services for older people, based on the ideology of quality of life.

The Government’s policy statement emphasizes the issues of older people, including the increase in nursing facilities.

On March 19, it was announced that an agreement was in port between the state and the local authorities on the development of nursing homes. In April, it was planned that 120 nursing facilities are planned to be used this year and obtain 600 new nursing facilities in the years 2026-2028.

At the beginning of May, the Minister of Social Affairs and Housing took the first shovel to a new nursing home in Asi in Hveragerði and a week ago she remembered Sleggja in Reykjavik, where there will be a thorough improvement of housing at Nauthólsveg, which will be changed to nursing homes.

Later today, the Minister in Húsavík holds a contract with the mayor of the Norðurþing for a nursing home at Auðbrekka in Húsavík.
