Amphora divers organized a cleaning of the bottom of Lake Ohrid
To reduce the solid waste that divers, through a series of actions, are removed from the bottom of Lake Ohrid, more environmental actions, education and proper waste management are needed.
According to divers from the Diving Club « Amphora », the most critical points are the ones where the rivers into the lake are flowing.
This weekend, actions are being carried out on the bottom of Lake Ohrid « Ohrid Eco 2025 » organized by the Diving Club « Amphora ».
Jovan Sekuloski of NC « Amphora » says the action focuses on several locations on Lake Ohrid, ranging from the estuary of the Cherava River near Ljubanista to Kalista in Struga, including Bone Bay, Camp Gradiste and City Port.
– The purpose of this action is to extract this solid and harmful waste from Lake Ohrid, to influence the public environmental awareness of the citizens of Ohrid and the coming tourists and, above all, be careful how we act with waste. The action has a large turnout from divers from NF Amphora and domestic diving clubs and the region, such as Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We find the most waste in the form of plastic, glass, cans, car tires, a construction debris that has accumulated at the bottom of Lake Ohrid over the years and this waste must be removed – says Sekuloski.
The most critical points, he points out, are the steps of the rivers, emphasizing that they have already implemented a project in a collapse with the Municipality of Ohrid entitled « Diving Ecopatrol » in which it was monitoring those points.
– All actions that follow slowly eliminate those points. But it is very difficult to remove all that waste. This problem needs to be solved in many ways, including environmental actions, education and proper waste management – adds Sekuloski.
Otherwise, the international action to clean the bottom of Lake Ohrid of Solid Waste, organized by NC « Amphora », is organized for the fourth year in a row, this year under the auspices of DM Drogaries and the Municipality of Ohrid.
