Among the Medis Awarders also a Slovenian doctor


Nine doctors and pharmacists from Central and Eastern Europe, who are also involved in research with regular work, received the Medis Award for Outstanding Research Achievement at today's ceremony at the Ljubljana Castle. Among them was a pediatrician dr. Alja Kavčič, the final selection was also neurologist Vesna Marija van Midden.

251 doctors and pharmacists from Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Hungarian, Northern Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia and this year for the first time from the Czech Republic and Slovakia have applied for the eleventh competition for the International Medis Awards have applied to reputable scientific journals for the first time. Expert Commission led by prof. dr. Borut Štrukelj evaluated 197, which met all the nomination criteria. Two researchers in the field of dermatology, pharmacy, gynecology, intensive medicine and anesthesiology, neurology, ophamology, pediatrics, pulmonology and rheumatology were included in the final selection.

Slovenes explored perinatal stroke and Parkinson's disease

Alja Kavčičwho won pediatrics, with her colleagues in the scientific journal Neuroimage, published the findings of a study of functional brain networks in children and adolescents after perinatal stroke. These are brain-vascular diseases during the period of fetal development of 20 weeks of gestation to the newborn's first month of age that cause damage to the brain tissue.

The study examined how brain networks change after perinatal stroke and how it affects cognitive abilities later in life. The purpose of the study was also to develop a method of studying functional brain networks that will allow serial tracking of brain networks after a central nervous system and assessment of treatment effectiveness.

Vesna Marija van Midden In an article published in the scientific journal Movement Disorders, she presented the potential of non -invasive stimulation of the ear branch of the vagus nerve as an additional treatment for Parkinson's disease. A study conducted with colleagues found that such stimulation in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease significantly improves motor functions such as step length, walking speed and swinging arm.

This was also emphasized by the President of the country Nataša Pirc Musar He added that it still happens that « the scientific breakthroughs of outstanding individuals from our region are under -recognized at home and recognize and appreciate them in international professional circles. »
