Americans pull to Mexico to release Trump

The couple made the decision on the same day that Trump won the presidential election last year.

– Not a chance that we are involved in this again, says his wife Rachel Scott Everett.

They have rented an apartment in the Condesa district of Mexico City, where many of the inhabitants are American Trump refugees. At the cafes’ outdoor seating in Condesa, it is almost as common to hear English as Spanish.

– Condesa has become a free zone for us, says Rachel Scott Everett.

Last time Trump was President of the United States, between 2017 and 2021, acted differently. They did not want to give up but tried to influence. They traveled to « Women’s March on Washington » which attracted over half a million people to a major protest the day after Trump’s installation. The couple organized themselves in their electoral district and tried to convince Trump supporters in their surroundings to change their minds.

– We fought and protested, but now it feels like people gave up. The resistance is gone, says Rachel Scott Everett.

The couple has a little bad conscience for leaving the United States, but believes that they were still right. In Mexico, they are easier to find energy to be able to go out on social media and respond to Trump’s supporters.

– If we had been home in Richmond, we would have just been angry with all Trump supporters. And when you are angry, it’s hard to convince. In Mexico, we get the energy we need to be able to argue better, says Brian Gibson, who runs a marketing company in the state of Virginia with his wife.

That the time difference between Mexico City And Richmond is only an hour allows them to work as usual. To be better integrated into Mexico, the couple goes an online course in Spanish and Rachel Scott Everett has started a dance course in Salsa. When it was Super Bowl earlier this year, the couple went to a local bar in Condesa and met other Americans who made the same decision as them.

– We haven’t encountered a single Trump supporter in Mexico City. They do not go here. They go on a resort holiday to Puerto Valleta, says Brian Gibson and laughs.

Mexico City is not the only Mexican city that has received Americans. One of the cities with most Americans per capita in Mexico is the historical cultural city of San Miguel de Allende, 30 miles north of the capital. It was founded in 1541 by Spanish colonizers and because of its location in the mountains the nights are cool, but the days hot. The air is also better than in Mexico City with its 20 million inhabitants.

– After the election, the interest shot to move here, says Sonia Diaz, who lives in San Miguel de Allende.
