Amazed economist. « I do not think that Romanians will easily accept such a pill »

Economics professor Cristian Păun said on Monday, for B1 TV, that we will surely reach tax increases, no matter how much the politicians are trying to calm us because it is a campaign, and this will happen because of the Government, which takes the necessary measures in order not to reach a huge budget deficit.

Amazed that the government was unable to attract one euro from European funds last year and now shrugs, Păun insists and says that neither tax increases will reduce deficit.

« I can not believe that, in 2024, you could not absorb one euro, a euro from the European funds, and now, in 2025, you raise your shoulders and live and you tell us: » Wait to cross the elections, we calm down and then pay for a higher VAT, an income tax of 16% instead of 10%. « 

« And a kindergarten child can govern a country by increasing taxes, » the teacher continued.

« We are on the notebook and on a very, very thick notebook, which thickens exponentially with every missed moment. »

The additional taxation has never helped no country to develop, the teacher insists.

« Before increasing taxes, which should be the last solution at this time, the government had to do many things. The economy had to be cared for and the tax base increases – with the same taxes, you collect more from more businesses that open, processes goods and services here.

Also, you had to prove an intransigence with everything that means evasion, smuggling, counterfeiting. You had to be very determined to collect more and not let there be double standard in the economy – uni pay their taxes, others are forgiven, pasture, amnesty.

We had to absorb those European funds, where the delay is maximum, and obviously for all these reasons, in the end, we have problems. We are not talking about expenses, reforms, which had to be kept under control and which finally had to generate a deficit pressure.

Now it is immoral and incorrect for the Government to come, to shrug, to give us no explanation why it absorbed European funds, why it fails with the collection, why it fails with evasion, smuggling, etc., why does not bring new investors to Romania, why it does not reform Romania, why it does not reduce the expenses. To shrug and say « I can’t do all this for you, I have to increase taxes. »

The increase of taxes is the sign of incompetence, the sign of failure and the sign that the model we have now and the leaders we have now fail to do good things for Romania.
