Already in fifth grade will teach how to deal with a weapon?

The day at the Kaunas Cadet Lyceum is the day – children learn how to put a turnstile. From 5 to 12th grade, young cadets acquire all basic military knowledge.

« How to install shelter, how to carry out tactical elements, how to set up a campsite – every element of survival, » said Tadas Venskūnas, Deputy Director of General Povilas Plechavičius Cadet.

« The most interesting practice is to go to the woods, to give friends there help in the medical field, » said Šarūnė Garnytė, a student of General Povilas Plechavičius cadet.

Most students associate the future with warfare.

« I am very sincerely waiting for the Military Academy – after completing it, I will enter the army, » said Ben Sinkevičius, a student of General Povilas Plechavičius’ Cadet Lyceum.

The acquired knowledge is already applying.

« We have examples of our cadets that have knowledge of first aid knowledge have saved five lives in the last few years, » said T. Venskūnas.

Similar skills in regular schools are only ninth and only three days a year. So politicians suggest expanding the program. Conservative L. Kasčiūnas, who registered the draft law, hopes that ten -year -olds could join the ninth grade next year.

« Then move to the younger classes-5-8 and the next year to move to the elders-11-12 classes, » explained L. Kasčiūnas, chairman of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats.

Mandatory military training is introduced in Polish schools. According to experts, the geopolitical situation requires changes in Lithuania as well.

« Our security environment does not seem to be improving soon, so we need to militarize the public, » said Vaidotas Malinionis, the head of the Colonel Association.

Students could improve their skills for longer: about three days – about a week. And the classes, according to L. Kasčiūnas, would take place in June. This would resolve the issue of shortening the school year.

« When there are some in the exams, with less learning, citizenship and defense skills would be on the spot and time, » the Conservative President said.

Pupils’ citizenship development is one of the goals of the current government. Minister of Education Raminta Popovienė agrees that the program is necessary to expand, but it is unclear how quickly it will be done.

« These are students, workload, process. We cannot introduce and carry everything in a chaotic, balanced manner, » the Minister of Education, Science and Sports shared his opinion.

Vice -Minister of National Defense Tomas Godliauskas says that one should start with the test project first.

« It will not be possible to introduce it so quickly, as this year alone, the 9-10 grades start to take 100 % of the 100 %.

The sooner we begin to integrate young people into patriotism, the more civic they will grow up and in the event of the war they will be prepared.

The program will lack instructors to conduct defense lessons. About 400 would be needed.

« The activity plan must be presented consistently as we prepare those professionals. Today we know that there is a lack of educators and this is a big problem, » said Popoviene.

The lessons are now being conducted by the Riflemen’s Union. Politicians suggest involving reserve soldiers in education, but now they are not worth it. The soldier receives an attachment of about € 300 at a pension, but if the extra activity is engaged, the money received from the attachment is deducted.

« Accepted amendment is a proposal for pedagogical activities to make an exception to reserve soldiers so that they can preserve the supplement to the state pension, » said L. Kasčiūnas.

According to the initiators of change, civic education and defense skills could encourage young people to enter the Riflemen’s Union or Army.

« The sooner we begin to integrate young people into patriotism, the more civic they will grow up and in the event of war, » Sinkevich said.

It is also proposed to establish a special center responsible for the defense and citizenship program and the preparation of the instructors.
