Almost every consumer in Luxembourg has already experienced unfair business practices

Compared to the EU average, consumers in Luxembourg generally have more confidence in traders and authorities. It is also noteworthy that more than half of the Luxembourg consumers can be guided by responsible consumption and repairs when making their buying decisions, compared to 43 percent in the EU average. This emerges from a survey by the EU Commission, which was published on Friday.

In Luxembourg, online purchasing habits are comparable to those in the rest of Europe, with the exception of purchases at national sellers. While 64 percent of EU citizens bought online retailers in their country, only 46 percent of local online retailers ordered in Luxembourg.

However, every third Luxembourg consumer was also confronted with fraud attempts on the Internet, while it was only a fifth in Europe.

Dealers and service providers pay attention to consumer rights.

This affirmed 76 percent of the consumers surveyed in Luxembourg in an EU survey.

Trust in the authorities that they protect consumer rights is 74 percent high in Luxembourg and has increased by seven percent since the last survey in 2022. Only 61 percent affirm this statement across Europe. This is particularly interesting against the background that 97 percent of Luxembourg respondents state that they have experienced unfair business practices compared to 84 percent across Europe. « Dealers and service providers pay attention to consumer rights »: 70 percent of those surveyed in Europe, 76 percent in Luxembourg.

Problems with goods or services have had about 15 percent of the respondents in Luxembourg and the EU in the past twelve months, with 85 percent of those affected in Luxembourg at the dealer or service provider. This number increased by 15 percent compared to 2022. Complaints to the European Consumer Center (ECC) increased by six percent.

Anyone who did not do anything mostly justifies this with the fact that the matter would last too long or that the sum is too low. However, every third also says that in the past he already filed a complaint with another problem and did not help at the time.

Every third also explains that he fell for advertising, the said offer or product only exists for a short time, which then turned out to be wrong.

Skepticism when it comes to sustainability

To ensure that the environmental impact of goods or services that you have bought in the past two weeks gives 53 percent of Luxembourgers compared to 43 percent of those surveyed across Europe.

As far as obstacles to considering sustainability in consumption, around 68 percent of Luxembourgers and the other Europeans say that sustainable products and services are often too expensive; About half of the Luxembourgers doubt that environmentally friendly products are really environmentally friendly (in the rest of the EU even 62 percent say that).

As far as online marketing is concerned, zero percent of Luxembourgers are not worried. Many Luxembourgers also see personalized advertising critically because they limited the selection and access to products.

The results of the Conditions Conditions Scoreboard 2025 are now being discussed with the member states, consumer associations and companies to support the development of future initiatives such as the 2025-2030 and the Digital Fairness Act.
