All the secrets and miracles of Jesus’ grave: the flame of ‘holy fire’, the scents around the grave, the healing of the tumor …
Jesus’ grave, Where, according to the Christian tradition, Jesus Christ was laid after the crucifixion and from where he was resurrected on the third day, he is one of the most holy places in the world. But despite centuries of worship and pilgrimage, its true character is still wrapped in a veil of secrets. Most Christian believers believe that the grave of Jesus is within the Church of the Holy Tomb in the Old Town of Jerusalem. The church was built in the fourth century at the behest of Emperor Constantine, after his mother Helena identified the place as the tomb of Jesus. For the first time in more than 200 years, 2016, a team of scientists opened a marble slab that covered the stone slab, believed to be the original bed of the surface where Jesus’ body was laid. The Old Roman layer of the rock was intact, although it was exposed to humidity, temporal influences and thousands of visitors a year. Yet the final scientific confirmation that this is indeed the grave of Jesus is impossible to give.
But it is indisputable that miracles on the tomb of Jesus have been happening and attracting attention for centuries, not only believers, but also scientists, skeptics and researchers. The most famous and most mysterious miracle that connect with the grave of Jesus Christ, especially in the context of the Church of the Holy Tomb in Jerusalem, is “Miracle of St. Fiery”. Every year, right on Holy Saturday, but the one according to the Julian calendar, within the chapel of Jesus’ tomb, the Orthodox patriarch enters with torches and candles. Then, without any external influence, there is a flame that fell on from itself, the heavenly fire. Believers claim that in the first few minutes, this fire does not bake and testify to unusual spiritual experiences.
Apart from the miracles of the Holy Fire, the believers are increasingly reporting strange scents around the grave every year. Specifically, some pilgrims claim that near the grave can smell a sweet, almost heavenly scent, without the presence of perfume or incense. In the Christian tradition, the smell of peace is often associated with the presence of holiness or angelic activity. The situations in which this scent spreads were also reported as it prays over the grave itself. It is considered a sign of God’s proximity and is a common motive in Orthodox testimonies.
Many pilgrims testify to the healing of the disease or relieving pain after visiting the grave. Most often this happens after prayer with an anointing stone (at the entrance to the church), where Jesus’ body was allegedly prepared for burial. Some claim that spinal, vision or tumors problems withdrawn after prayer at that place. The pilgrims also reported the appearance of the flashes of light or the « heavenly light » within the grave chapel itself, especially during the night, and the light does not come from electrical sources.
Miracles on the grave of Jesus Christ are not simply « evidence », they are experiences. For believers, they confirm the faith in the resurrected Christ. For skeptics, they remain open mysteries. And for all of us, regardless of faith, they are a reminder that there are things that go beyond logic. The grave of Jesus is not just an archeological location, it is a place where history, faith and science collide. The secrets that accompany him, from his accurate location, through the issue of resurrection, to the complex interreligious relationships, make him one of the greatest enigma of humanity. And perhaps it is precisely at this combination of uncertainty and hope of his deepest message.
