All before the World Cup final in jumping and dressage
Where and when?
This year’s World Cup finals in dressage and jumping will be decided in Basel between April 3-6.
Historical victories a year ago
Last year’s World Cup final, which was decided in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, became a Swedish success story when Sweden won both the jump and dressage finals for the first time.
Jump rider Henrik von Eckermann and King Edward defended the World Cup victory from 2023 when they also won in 2024.
In addition, it became Swedish even in third place in the form of Peder Fredricson at Catch Me Not.
In the dressage finals, Patrik Kittel and Touchdown got everything to match and won. It was Kittel’s first victory in a World Cup final.
How will it go in this year’s final?
By virtue of last year’s victories, both Henrik von Eckermann and Patrik Kittel were guaranteed a place in this year’s final, and therefore did not have to chase points in the World Cup competitions.
Since no other Swedes riders have managed to qualify, the two will be the only Swedish final riders.
However, both von Eckermann and Kittel will ride horses other than last year.
At the end of last year, von Eckermann announced that his super horse King Edward would not take several indoor competitions. Instead, it is Iliana who is his final horse. The mare has the capacity required for the ship to end up high in the results list, but is not as smooth and stable as King Edward which makes their chances difficult to assess.
This year Kittel chooses to invest in Forever Young. It is also a good horse, but not really in the same class as touchdown.
In advance, none of the two equipages are counted as favorites to the final victory.
Favorites this year
Britain’s Charlotte Fry at Glamordale may be seen as a favorite in the dressage.
In the jumping it feels very open.
The home crowd is allowed to put its biggest hope to Marcus Fuchs since it became clear that Steve Guerdat misses the final due to a back surgery.
Frenchman Kevin Staut won the Western European league and has shown that he intends to join in and fight for the final victory, and if Germany Richard Vogel dots the form top in the same way he did in November when he won two World Cup competitions he can interfere in the victory battle.
