Alar Caris: Artificial intelligence will not replace the teacher, but together they can achieve more
Estonia President Alar Caris, speaking at the 35th anniversary of the Union of Education Workers, spoke about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in Estonian education and emphasized that the technology does not replace the teacher, but serves as a tool that helps him in his work. “One thing is clear for sure – artificial intelligence will not replace the teacher. However, the teacher and technology, acting together, can strengthen each other’s influence, ”the president said.
According to President Karis, the introduction of AI is no longer a matter of the future: “These smart programs are already in computers and phones of many students and teachers. Therefore, it is important to consciously take control. ”
The head of state noted that in the fall, the best language models will become available to students of 10th and 11th grades and their teachers. “The goal is not to impose technology, but to reasonably integrate them into everyday educational work. It is important to provide all schools with equal opportunities and prevent the deepening of a digital gap, ”said President Caris.
Referring to meetings with teachers and experts in the field of education, the president identified several success stories. “Teachers who tried to use AI and have learned to do this competently, save the valuable time on the preparation of lessons and can concentrate more on creativity and communicate with students,” said President Caris. At the same time, he did not deny the presence of skepticism and emphasized that each teacher has the right and should be able to experiment and study.
In his speech, the president also emphasized the need for a balance: “The ability to determine when to provide the right to make AI decisions, and when to maintain control of a person, it is of key importance for both teachers and students,” he said.
President Karis reminded of distance learning during coronacialism, to which Estonian schools were well prepared, and expressed the hope that such readiness should also be formed in relation to the introduction of AI. “In any case, artificial intelligence pushes us to new methods of training and teaching. Our task is to do this consciously, controlled and supporting each other, ”the president said.
The president called on education workers to discuss the role of AI in schools, supporting teachers’ readiness to learn and joint work to ensure that education in Estonia remains strong and inclusive.
