Alain Thorn becomes the new president of the Consil National de Justice

The Consil National de Justice, an independent body with the order to strengthen the judiciary in Luxembourg, chose a new tour on Tuesday evening: Alain Thorn will take over the position of president from July 1, 2025.
He is supported by the two Vice President John Petry and Jean-Jacques Rommes. Your mandates in the so -called « Bureau » of the Council run over a period of two years.

The Consil National de Justice plays a central role in the interaction of the three state forces. He sees himself as a bridge between Judicative, Executive and Legislative and ensures that judicial independence is maintained. In addition, the CNJ provides statements on legislative proposals and reforms and accompanies structural developments within the judiciary. Every year, the committee submits a report to Parliament on the situation of the Luxembourg judiciary.

The CNJ consists of a total of nine members: six of whom are judges or prosecutors who are elected by their colleagues. In addition, there are a representative of the legal profession and two qualified personalities who are appointed by Parliament. The Consil has no direct decision -making powers about personnel issues, but can initiate disciplinary proceedings, coordinate further training and monitor ethical standards within the judiciary.
