Ajax with poor starting position to Frankfurt for Return

Ajax starts next week with an unfavorable starting position on the return against Eintracht Frankfurt for a place in the quarterfinals of the Europa League. The leader of the Eredivisie lost the home game with the number 3 in Germany 2-1, after it had given away a lead.

Ajax started the seventeenth European game of this season. Brian Brobbey shot the post in the second minute and scored eight minutes later. The striker headed after an accurate pass by Jordan Henderson, who, together with Remko Pasveer and Josip Sutalo, returned to the basic formation.

Shortly after the opening goal, Pasveer prevented the equalizer of the visitors. He just got an arm against a shot from Ansgar Knauff. Then the 41-year-old keeper injured himself when kicking a ball. Trainer Francesco Farioli could not rely on his reserve goalkeeper Matheus. Ajax did not register the Brazilian, who came over from Braga in the last transfer period, for the Europa League. Clubs were allowed to put three new players on the European list halfway through the season. At Ajax they chose Davy Klaassen, Lucas Rosa and Oliver Edvardsen.

Jay Gorter, the third goalkeeper of Ajax, was under the bar for less than four minutes when the visitors were tied. Hugo Larsson tried with a long shot and hit the goal through the body of Brobbey. Once on the same level, the team that won the Europa League in 2022 had the better of the game. Both teams chose the attack in an attractive duel where possible. The number 3 in Germany combined slightly smoother and more effectively.

Two teenagers stood out in the basic formation of Ajax. Jorrel Hato played his hundredth game for his club one day before his 19th birthday. Jorthy Mokio was preferred about a week after his 17th birthday over Steven Berghuis and Kian Fitz-Jim in midfield, where the suspended Klaassen was missing. The 18-year-old Don-Angelo Konadu was still in the field because coach Fararoli took the strong playing Brobbey to the side after 64 minutes and Bertrand Traoré Kramp.

Eintracht Frankfurt took the lead in the seventieth minute through Ellyes Skhiri. He could score because the Italian referee Simone Sozza did not whistle when Youri Baas went to the ground after a duel with Knauff. Konadu missed a big chance in the final phase. Henderson received another yellow card for his comments on the arbitrator. He is therefore suspended for the return.
