Ajax will waste in the last seconds in Groningen, PSV has championship in its own hands

The title fight in the Eredivisie has not yet been decided. In the final seconds of the match against FC Groningen, Ajax gave the initiative to hand over the leading position. The Amsterdammers, who had one point ahead of PSV on Wednesday evening prior to the second-to-last round, played a draw in the Euroborg (2-2). PSV is now the leader.

Ajax started the match well. Right back Anton Gaaei shot the leader in the 27th minute with a hard slider ahead. In the second half, Groningen, supported by a sold -out stadium, was stronger: shortly after the break, Spits Thom van Bergen made the equalizer.

Fifteen minutes later, the striker Wout Weghorst, not for the first time this season, was important for Ajax, who took care of the 1-2 lead. That seemed enough for the Amsterdammers, but it still went wrong at the last minute. In the 99th minute, Groningen midfielder Mats Seuntjens turned a free kick for the goal. Goalkeeper Remco Pasveer was wrong, after which Thijmen Blokzijl tickets the 2-2.

Sunday last round

Because PSV won without too many problems from Heracles (4-1), Peter Bosz’s team is now suddenly at the top of the Eredivisie. On Sunday in the last round of play, the title race will be definitively decided: Ajax then plays at home against FC Twente, while PSV travels to Rotterdam for a match against Sparta. A Eindhoven victory is enough for the championship.

Chances are that the moderate form that Ajax will show in the last matches of the Eredivisie will cost the team the championship. A few weeks ago, the Francesco Farioli team had eight points ahead of PSV. A defeat against FC Utrecht (4-0), draw against Sparta (1-1), loss against NEC (0-3) and Wednesday’s Flater on Wednesday made PSV, which in the meantime everything won, continued to participate for the title.
