Housing crisis
The Spanish government has taken a series of measures to tackle the housing crisis, which has been contributed by short -term leasing. Companies such as Airbnb are used by property owners to use their property financially, limiting housing supply on the market and raising prices.
In recent months, tens of thousands of Spaniards have taken to the streets protesting to increase housing and rental costs. Most attribute it to the short -term real estate leases to tourists who want to vacation. Platforms such as Airbnb, renting holiday homes and apartments have multiplied in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, as well as in many other popular tourist destinations.

‘It is enough’
Consumer rights minister, Pablo Bustinoui, said: « Extremely with the protection of those who argue with the right to housing. »
In 2024, Barcelona announced a plan to close a total of 10,000 apartments that have a short -term lease in the city by 2028. The aim is to ensure the housing offer for residents of the city and those who work there. The ministry said it had alerted Airbnb to accommodation that has not complied with the rules for months. The company had appealed against the court ruling.
The Supreme Court ratified the Spanish government’s ruling on Airbnb. This, according to Minister Bastinoui, implies the immediate removal of 5,800 registration of rental property from the site. They will continue to issue orders until the platform is removed from the platform and the 66,000 listings.
