Aimed at 60 billion structure
Sailors’ Day Council, Hrafnista and DAS apartments are aiming for 50-60 billion nursing home development and service apartments to meet the rapidly growing group of senior citizens over the next 15 years.
The announcement states that the structure will be in three core areas in the capital area, Laugarás, Hraunvangi and Skógarbæ.
The goal is to ensure a variety of residence and service routes for a growing group of older people and to respond to the urgent need for about 100 new nursing facilities per year until 2040.
« Emphasis is placed on the fact that health promotion and activity opportunities for senior citizens are in the foreground. Research shows that movement and social participation contribute to improved health, well -being and independence in the upper years. With the right approach and organization, it can be ensured that the growing group of older people receive services.
Then the main figures that call for action are reviewed:
- The proportion of 67 years and older increases from 12.4 % (2020) to 19.2 % (2040) and approaches 21 % (2050) (Statistics Iceland’s population forecast).
- Average life is prolonged – predicted 88.7 years for women and 84.4 years for men in 2069.
- 22 % of employed persons were 55-74 years in 2023, compared with 17 % in 2003.
« This development calls for new solutions in housing and services – especially for those who choose independently but need access to services and social support, » the announcement says.
