Aggression towards doctors is growing. « The police often discontinue the case »
On April 29, 2025, information about the brutal murder of dr. Tomasz Solecki. The valued orthopedist was attacked at work by the patient. To pay tribute to a murdered colleague, a black silence march was organized on May 10. Medics from all over Poland in black costumes marched through Warsaw.
In this way, they also want to oppose all forms of aggression against medical staff. And they appeal to the rulers to take action to increase their sense of security. – Aggression has recently been ubiquitous. However, we want to point out that when it comes to the health care system, it was all the time – emphasizes Dr. Władysław Krajewski, vice -chairman of the OZZL Residents Agreement and a member of the District Medical Chamber in Gdańsk.
How to increase the safety of doctors? Experts indicate solutions
And when asked about what you can do to increase the sense of security, he primarily indicates the need for legislative changes. – We want to increase the safety of doctors, not only by increasing penalties, but also its inevitability. Many of my work colleagues pay attention to the fact that if aggression occurs, the police because of the low social harm of the act, they give up any action – says Dr. Krajewski.
And as emphasized by Dr. Magdalena Kocot-Kępska, a valued researcher and specialist in the field of pain in the field of pain, medical cooperation procedures should be simplified above all.
– In such a way that they do not involve many hours of audition and testimony. Very often we do not want to report aggressive cases, because it is associated with the loss of our time. Instead of treating patients, we spend long hours at the police station – he explains.
Very often, patients behave aggressively under the influence of drugs.
– I work in the Pain Treatment Clinic, so I have very specific patients, with chronic pain. Patients with a syndrome of mental illness are also very often. Not only in the form of depression or anxiety, but also schizophrenia. Uncontrolled emotions cause that the patient explodes in the office and creates the atmosphere of tension also in the corridor. Then other patients begin to be afraid-explains Dr. Magdalena Kocot-Kępska.

Dr. Oskar Stolarski also often dealt with dangerous situations at work. – except that I usually witness aggression, because such people are usually brave, but in the face of weaker people, but invectives and threats in my direction are on the agenda – explains the doctor working at the Mazowieckie Specialist Hospital in Radom and the MSWiA polyclinic in Kielce.
Aggression especially applies to women. – I have encountered the explosions of patients who were dissatisfied with the treatment of pain or that I said that I couldn’t do anything more. Because the disease is incurable and I will not cure the cancer. That’s why I can only give even morphine. And it met with aggression. I think that because I am a woman-adds Dr. Magdalena Kocot-Kępska.
Is there more aggression in patients than it used to be? – It seems to me that Pandemia has liberated such reactions. First of all, disinformation about the fact that vaccines kill. We left Pandemia victorious as a society. However, what surrounded her at the moment pays off. And this is a consequence of what was happening then
So how do doctors deal with harassing people?
– We have our own empathic abilities and the ability to deal with patient aggression. But I admit that we really lack such extensive trainings – explains the doctor.

Doctors are deeply shocked by murder at the University Hospital in Krakow. Their colleague, Dr. Tomasz Solecki, died when he took the patient in a hospital office. Jarosław W., attacked him with a knife and hurt many times. Before the attack, dissatisfied with the effects of treatment, he also harassed the doctor. Although the medic did the art, which was confirmed by the investigation, carried out by the Patient Rights Ombudsman.
– There is a lot of anger, frustration, anxiety in all of them and this is poignant. But we cannot allow these emotions to turn into bitterness and anger, because it builds a wall between the wall between medical staff and patients. And this affects the quality of services, and we simply cannot afford it, because everyone will lose it – says psychiatry, Sebastian Goncerz, chairman of the OZZL residents agreement.
