« Age of Russian fossil fuels in Europe is coming to an end »
The president of the European Commission defended on Wednesday that « the age of Russian fossil fuels in Europe is coming to an end, » when the EU wants to end Russia’s gas imports by the end of 2027.
« We will work to prohibit all other Russian gas imports, both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG), the late 2027 and, in addition, we will reinforce the controls of Russia’s shadow fleet. The era of Russian fossil fuels in Europe is coming to an end, » said Ursula von der Leyen.
In a debate about the Ukraine War in the European Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg, the leader of the community executive said it was « a matter of political will. »
« Last year, our Russian energy imports recovered slightly. So we need a final boost to gradually eliminate Russian fossil fuels, » he said
According to Lusa agency, about the war, von der Leyen defended « just and lasting peace » because « a bad deal could encourage Putin to return to more and that would be a revenue for more instability and insecurity, » namely when the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe marks.
The position comes a day after the European Commission has proposed that EU countries cease to import gas from Russia by the end of 2027, ending new contracts and immediate purchases later this year to stop being dependent on Moscow.
At issue is an EU script to gradually eliminate Russian energy imports, in which the institution proposes the cessation of all other Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.
The script also foresees a gradual removal of Russian oil and nuclear energy from the EU markets, as well as the bet on LNG, when Norway and the US is currently the main suppliers to the community space.
