On the site of the old prison in Sint-Jacobstraat in Dendermonde there was a fire in the night from Saturday to Sunday. It originated on a country estate. A prisoner was taken to the hospital for care. A wing was evacuated for a while.
The facts took place in the night from Saturday to Sunday, around 3.30 a.m. A fire arose on the country estate where material is stored. How that could happen is still unclear, but there was a lot of smoke development. The smoke also entered the building, making a prisoner unwell and was taken to the hospital for care.
The fire brigade, police and medical services arrived. 22 prisoners were evacuated to another country estate. « The fire and the situation were almost immediately under control, so that the prisoners could return to their cell again after medical control, » says Mayor Leen Dierick (CD&V).
It is the second fire in a short time on the site in Sint-Jacobstraat. A few weeks ago a washing machine was caught in the building. Then two people were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The public prosecutor of East Flanders appointed an expert for the fire on Saturday night to investigate the cause. (Svov)
