Greenland has been visited by one of Europe’s most influential state leaders.

On Sunday, France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, landed in Nuuk, where he met with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and the Greenlandic government leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. With the visit, France and the EU sent a clear signal of political support to Greenland in a time of rising geopolitical attention to the Arctic.

France has decided to establish a Consulate General in Nuuk. Thus, for the first time, the country gets official diplomatic presence in Greenland. At a joint press conference in the Greenlandic capital, Macron emphasized the importance of the region – and the support France wants to provide.

« Greenland is located in the middle of the geopolitical game and this whole area is threatened. The strategic position and natural resources make it a place that has become a target of predatory operation. So first and foremost I would like to send a message of solidarity from the EU and France towards Denmark and the Greenlandic people, » Emmanuel Macron said according to Look and hear.

The president emphasized that the EU has an important role in playing in the Arctic and noting that the establishment of a consulate should be seen as part of a broader European presence and interest in the region’s development.

Close Danish-French collaboration

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen took the opportunity to thank France for political commitment and European solidarity in a time characterized by uncertainty and rising strategic tensions.

« On behalf of Denmark: Thank you for your leadership and for being at the forefront of principles that we have struggled together to achieve and which we are now struggling to protect, » Frederiksen said.

During the visit, Macron, Frederiksen and Nielsen participated in a helicopter inspection of the landscape, visited a glacier and were aboard the frigate Niels Juelwhere discussions focused, among other things, on climate challenges, security policy and economic development in the Arctic.

Strategic context and international interest

The visit comes on the basis of an increasing international interest in Greenland, especially after US President Donald Trump, shortly after his deployment in January, expressed a desire for American control over the island – an ambition he has repeated several times. Macron has stated in connection with the visit that Trump has been informed of the journey to Greenland.

Greenland, with its location and natural resources, has become a central piece in the global power play in the Arctic. France’s presence and support is therefore seen as an important signal of European commitment and a strengthened transatlantic cooperation.

After his stay in Nuuk, Emmanuel Macron continues to Canada, where he attends the annual G7 summit from Sunday to Tuesday.
