After 12 thousand 500 years, they are among us again: Game of Thrones came true! – Cyprus Newspaper
Scientists have re -derived a genre of wolves that exhausted 12,500 years ago and inspired the wolves in the Game of Thrones series.
Genetic science managed to bring back the extinct ulukurts. However, this groundbreaking step brought about ethical and philosophical debates.
Ulukurt, a wolf type that was exhausted about 12 thousand 500 years ago, returned to the world under the leadership of scientists.
The Biotechnology Company, which operates in Dallas, USA, explained the Ulukurt project to the public by saying, “We have brought a completely destroyed species to life for the first time.” The three primitive gray wolves developed by the company pushed the limits of modern biotechnology, while at the same time opened a new page in the world of science and ethics.
Genetic time machine
According to Time Magazine, researchers released the Ulukurt gene map using DNAs obtained from two different fossils of ancient times. This map was compared with the genes of gray wolves, the closest relatives living today. Later, 20 different genetic arrangements were made on gray wolf cells with CRISPR technology. The obtained cell lines were transferred to the carrier mothers with the cloning process and three healthy puppies were born. Two male Ulukurt was born on October 1, 2024 and one female on January 30, 2025.
Game of Thrones’ real terrible wolves
Aenocyon Dirus, who inspired the huge wolves in Game of Thrones, was one of the most powerful predators in the prehistoric North America. This species, which is larger than gray wolves, thicker fur and strong jaw, is now among us again.
Science or philosophy?
Stockholm University Evolutionary Genetic Specialist Love Dalen, one of the advisors of the project, said that 99.9 percent of the genome of the born pups belongs to the gray exchange rate, but with some original Ulukurt genes, these creatures have a unique appearance in history. “This is a matter of definition, but in fact it is a philosophical debate in essence,” he said.
Discussion of Hybridity and Animal Welfare
Colossal’s criticism as well as his success in this field is remarkable. Some circles argue that budgets spent to reproduce the disappeared species should be directed to the existing ecosystem problems. In addition, the health and welfare of the carrier animals is also a matter of discussion. However, the company claims that the ethical framework is preserved through its activities with the American Animal Protection Association.
Is it the right mammoths?
Founded in 2021 under the partnership of George Church and Ben Lamm, Colossal aims to bring the tiger of Mamut, Dodo and Tasmania to life. The company has received more than $ 435 million in investments so far, while in 2028 it plans to introduce the first woolen mammoth puppy.
