Actor meta velander is dead

Meta Velander was one of the real veterans in Sweden’s theater life and was active as an actor until 2020.

– She had been quite hopeless lately, no special illness, but it was the fuel that ended simply, says her son to TT.

Meta Velander has lived for some time on a retirement home and she is mourned by children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren.

She was born in Djursholm in 1924. Already during school hours she had actor dreams but when the student degree was completed, the mother’s demands were clear: First, Meta Velander had to take a « real » job. After the secretary training and a period of work on the Board of Agriculture where she had to count seals tail, expected studies at Gösta Terserus theater school before she entered Dramaten’s student school in Stockholm in 1947.

By that time, the film debut was already completed, two years earlier she had participated in Hasse Ekman’s « Royal Patrask ». Another 50 films and television series would be over the years, including roles in « The House Silfvercrona’s riddle », « The shipping company », « Pippi Longstocking » and « Pip-Larssons ».

Already in 1960 she was engaged by the Stockholm City Theater and became faithful throughout her life, only with short breaks. Maria Sid is theater manager at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern:

– She is one of the most beloved actors – it feels terribly difficult to say that she was and not that she is. It is with sadness that we receive the message. Of course, we are very affected by this, says Maria Sid.

Meta Velander worked with several of the foremost directors of the 20th century such as Alf Sjöberg and Keve Hjelm.

The last sets of Velander participated in directed by Sissela Kyle. In addition to the anniversary celebration « The Great Theater Festival » where Velander participated remotely, they also did « and so they lived happy » together.
