According to information from NATO circles, the United States loses patience with Russia in its efforts for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio made it clear at an alliance meeting in Brussels that President Donald Trump will probably not accept the current delay tactics of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin for long. It was more about « weeks than months », he added to the German press agency from participant circles of the meeting.

However, it remains unclear how the United States would react in the case that Putin does not change his course. New US sanctions against the Russian economy, but also additional arms aids for Ukraine, are the options. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on the question of a possible ultimatum to Russia that he did not want to interfere with the talks between the United States and Russia.

Trump wants ceasefire

Trump has been trying to convey a solution to Ukraine in the war of Russia. He has several times to understand that this was in the USA’s own interest and would be economically advantageous for his country. Putin rejected a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Trump. As a minimum consensus, it was agreed to take out objects of energy supply to attacks – which in practice does not work, how both warring parties accuse themselves.

Several European Allies expressed understanding at the Foreign Ministers’ meeting on Friday that Trump is now losing patience. Russia owes an answer to the United States, said the Frenchman Jean-Noël Barrot. The British Foreign Minister David Lammy said with a view to Putin: « He could now agree with a ceasefire ». Instead, he continues to bomb Ukraine, its civilian population and its energy suppliers. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha had previously informed the partners about the current situation at a meeting of the NATO UKRAINE Council.

Rutte said after the consultations that Allies had promised Ukraine further support in the fight against Russia and when building up even more powerful forces. However, he did not provide any specific information. Rutte had already said on Wednesday that Allies had already promised security support worth more than 20 billion euros in the first three months of this year.
