Academic rowing in Narva – 50 years!
2025 is an anniversary for academic rowing in Narva, because it was 1975 that is the date of the official foundation of academic rowing as a sport in Narva. History suggests that before in Narva competitions were held in folk boats, plans were created to open academic rowing as a sport. The real embodiment of all these ideas was systematized only in 1975, when the department of academic rowing was created on the basis of the Kalev sports society, the first coach of which was Igor Yuryevich Popov.
The first training began to be carried out in the second half of March on a warm channel (after all, in Narva there was no special base for athletes) – that is, exactly 50 years ago. Since 1979, Lyudmila Pavlovna Kuzem, the pupil of which Yuri Ida (competed for a long time, became a two of Estonia’s leading athletes later, in the Narva Academic Rowwoman in Narva.
In 1986, the city Narva Sports School « Energia » (director Ivan Sergeyevich Mashtakov) was founded in Narva, the first coach of which Valery Skimescu was the first coach. In the same year, the coach Sergei Glushko was invited to work in a sports school. In 1987, the Narvityan Vyacheslav Divonin became the USSR champion among young men in a single boat, and his coach Valery Skmysku in 1988 was awarded the title of Honored Coach of ESSR.
Vyacheslav Divonin was the first to climb from the galaxy of the Narva rowers to the very top of the world elite of academic rowing, becoming in 1988 as part of the four paired in Italy champion in the world in the academic rowing among juniors. He became the first Narva athlete to represent the city of Narva at the Summer Olympic Games – in 1992 in Barcelona.
In 1998, the Narvityan Leonid Gulov in Austria became the world champion in the academic rowing among juniors, later Leonid became a four -time owner of such a high rank. In the period from the late 90s and in the 2000s, the Narvites Leonid Gulov, Andrei Shilin, Igor Kuzmin, Vladimir Latin, Oleg Dmitriev, Evgeny Ryndin with his victories and prizes at the World and European Championships, participating in the Olympic Games, made a huge contribution to the development of Narva as the Center for the Development of the Academic Croat in our country.
In 2024, the Narvityan Mikhail Kushtein, as part of the male four of the steam room, won the right to represent the city of Narva at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, where the Estonian team took a high seventh place.
It is important to note all the Narva rowers who have trained at the rowing base over the years and performed at various levels of competitions, each of which made its invaluable contribution to the history of the rowing of our city. We also hope for the younger generation, which will continue the glorious victorious tradition of the Narva rowing in the international arena.
Today, at the rowing base in Narva, all the conditions for children are created to engage in academic rowing: the gym, the gym, rowing simulators, boxes for storing sports boats are installed, the entire coastal infrastructure is asphalt, and there is a beautiful Narvsky promenade nearby.
Now in the Narva sports school « Energia » are working on academic rowing Valery Skykamesku, Sergey Glushko and Tatyana Dubinko, who are engaged in the search and preparation of young talents in our city.
The Narva Sports School « Energia » invites everyone to engage in an exciting sport – academic rowing, hoping that there will be new champions among them.
