Every two minutes a woman dies worldwide due to complications during pregnancy or during delivery. This is evident on Monday from a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2023 it was about around 260,000 women worldwide. Urgent action is needed to reduce this figure, says the United Nations Health Organization (UN).

The number of women who die before, during or after the birth was decreased by 40 percent between 2000 and 2023. This is largely due to better access to essential health services, says the WHO.

« Although this report votes hopeful, the data also show how dangerous pregnancy is still in a large part of the world today, » says who-chief of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Yet solutions for the vast majority of the complications that are at the basis of mother mortality, he says.
The United Nations striking for a sustainable development of mother and child by reducing the number of mother mortality to 100,000 by 2030. In 2000 it was 328 deaths per 100,000 births. « Women not only have the right to survive their pregnancy, but also to live in good health, » said the WHO.
