The founders, including visionaries, such as science fiction writer Neil Stevenson, computer pioneer Danny Chilis and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, wanted to create something that would literally « beat » for centuries – a monument to time and a symbol of long -term thinking. Hilis, who devised the original clock concept, asked a simple question: what if we could do something that people could use and observe for 10,000 years? The answer has become an unprecedented philosophical, scientific and technical adventure.
The clock is being built in the Sierra Diablo Mountains, donated by Bezos, one of the main financiers of the project, which has so far invested $ 42 million. The entrance to the clock is through a narrow tunnel in the mountain, and the interior is the size of a multi -storey building. The mechanism itself is about 150 meters high, and all components, gears, wheels and axes are made of stainless steel, polished stone and wear -resistant alloys, from ultra -abundant materials such as titanium, ceramics and stainless steel, with minimal use.
