Subtitled as ‘a completely incredible event in two acts’, comedy ‘Marriage’ It was indeed incredible dramatic construct, written back in 1835, which, with its innovative, extremely modern and genre and themed various dramaturgical procedures, immeasurably influenced the history of comedy, but also dramas in general … in general …
It is a message of the Zagreb Satirical Theater Kerempuh, and at the same time the announcement of the new premiere title. ‘Women’ play NV Gogoljadirected Dora Ruzdjak Podolski and adaptation and dramaturgy Tomislav Zajecwill have a premiere on Friday, April 25. As they say, this play « has opened up the then Russian literature completely new, previously unexplored paths, and her British satire and exceptional humor make extremely current today ».
The main character, the court counselor of Potkolesin, hesitant in the idea of marriage and under social and family pressure, goes to the home of Agafje Tihonovna, in which other beggars are gathering ready for marriage. Nobody asks the young Agafa if he wants to marry, the fjokla’s conductor Ivanovna tries to arrange a job and make money, and the Kotlesin’s best friend Kočkarev has his reasons why Potkolesin pushes into an agreed marriage. So the path to marriage suddenly becomes everything just not an easy task…
They add that in this work, marriage is not portrayed as an act of love. « This universal comedy reveals the absurd abuse of the idea of marriage and criticizes the formalism, especially in the sphere of intimate relationships. Marriage is not portrayed as an act of love but as a social obligation, a status symbol and a means of realizing personal benefits, that is, as an institution subject to foreign expectations and social pressures.
On the other hand, marriage as a social agreement brings clearly prescribed frameworks and actually brings control of individuals, but also – which is significant and more specific than that, most often and above all, the control of women. In this sense, ‘marriage’ seeks answers to questions about how to fight with social but also self -imposed repression. Despite the flaws of their characters shown, which successfully or less successfully hide their weaknesses, deeply suppressed desires, their own freedom, and finally identities, Gogolj does so with warmth, understanding and compassion. «
