A tragic attack of the polar bear. A 33-year-old hunter was killed
A group of three experienced hunters – Darryl Kaunak, Leo Ijjangiaq and Laurent Junior Uttak – set off by a boat from a small town of Naujaat on the bay of Hudson to hunt for Karibu and Narwal. The two -day trip was to be calm and fast. However, while drinking tea in the camp, they were suddenly surprised by the upcoming polar bears.
Bear attack. The hunt turned into a nightmare
It turned out that the mother and her young approached the group of friends. The bear apparently felt threatened with the presence of people.
According to Leo Ijjangiaq for CBC News, the situation developed quickly. The man tried to scare away the bear, shooting in the air. However, the animal did not react. Uttaka attacked in a split second, biting him in the head. A moment later he threw himself at the escaping kamunak.
The bear caught him and massacred him. « He was lived alive, » his companions admitted. Ijjangiaq tried to shoot the weapon, but his shotgun stamped. He reached for a different rifle and fired a shot that killed the animal. He also shot young bears.
Nunavut. The hunters stayed with the body of a friend
After the end of the attack, Ijjangiaq and Uttak tried to give the kaunak first aid. Unfortunately it was too late. They covered his corpse, and then decided that they would not leave his body, despite the danger.
Unfortunately, their boat was damaged – the ice broke inside, immobilizing the unit and preventing return. Uphered in Lyon Inlet, they had to survive in harsh conditions. In the following days, their camp was encircled many times by other polar bears, which they also had to shoot.
« I told my friend that I would take all criminal responsibility for every bear we killed, » reported Ijjangiaq.
Hunters survived a few days in the boat cabin, constantly watching the friend’s body. It was only the Helicopter from the CCGS Louis ST-Laurent icebreaker that managed to find them and transport them to a safe place. To transfer the corpse of the kamunak to the helicopter, three men were needed.
Darryl Kunak’s death is the second such brutal tragedy in Nunavut. In the summer of 2018, Aaron Gibbons from Arviat gave his life, protecting his family from the polar bear attack. He was unarmed.
