On Saturday, May 31, violent storms swept over northern Egypt, causing chaos in the main city of the region, Alexandria. The storms were accompanied by hail rainfall and gusty wind blowing at a speed of up to 50 km/h. The Government of Alexandria announced the extensive disturbances throughout the city.

Powerful storms in the north of Egypt
Many street trees and lanterns were fallen, local roads were linked. Social media circulated photos and recordings showing the effects of a storm. You can see the streets flooded with water, lightning strokes, overturned energy poles, damaged vehicles and downpours that caused panic among the inhabitants.
Mahmoud Shaheen, director of forecasting and early warning at the Egyptian Meteorological Office, assigned a storm to a low pressure system that lowered the temperature and created storm clouds near Earth.

Services put in a state of the highest readiness
Governor Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed ordered all city departments to be in a state of high readiness. The authorities of Alexandria lowered the pressure in the water supply and deployed sanitary vehicles in the most endangered areas. The services helped drivers imprisoned in flooded cars, the number of bus connections was increased to make it easier for residents to move around the city. Removal of fallen trees and other obstacles from roads has already begun.
Egyptian services predict that difficult weather conditions can remain in the following days. For this reason, it was postponed, among others Exams at the University of Alexandria.
