A study showed which classes provide a quick start to a career and which high salaries

Each year, 70% of graduates of high school graduates enroll in higher education, and nearly 2/3 of them combine learning with work. This shows a study on the realization of the labor market of graduates in Bulgaria in Bulgaria in the period 2018-2023 of the Open Society, commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Science.

The data also shows that 20% of the high school graduates start work immediately without studying, and for 10 percent of high school graduates, there are no data to be provided, neither registered as unemployed or enrolled as students.

With all covered five admissions of employment among vocational education graduates, it is significantly higher than their peers from the profiled classes. In the five years ago, the highest share of the work marketed on the fifth year of graduation is one of the graduates of the professional classes in the school in the areas « Technique », « Informatics » and « Business Administration and Administration » – 75%each. They are followed by « social services » and « environmental protection ». The press release of the Ministry of Education is not clear whether the data covers the already university graduates, or they only reflect the realization based on secondary education.

Natural and mathematical classes provide the highest salaries

Graduates of secondary education with a natural and mathematical profile receive the highest salaries. In the fifth year after graduation in high school, their average taxable income brings 2000 BGN. They are followed by the graduates of vocational secondary education from the Informatics District and those with the foreign language profile.

Dr. Svetla Petrova, Educational Expert: Early profiling after 7th grade enhances educational inequalities

There is a big difference in the realization of the labor market and income between graduates and enrolled, but unfinished 12th grade, including due to the failure of state matriculation exams. Those who do not have a high school diploma have higher employment in the first year after leaving school (some of them work while they are students). In the medium term, however, their employment remains relatively low – about 40%, and that of the graduates is increasing, the authors of the study note. The difference in pay is even greater.

As of the fifth year after completing secondary education, the income of graduates with sustainable employment is about three times higher than the income of non-declined temporary employment. Even the temporary employment of the graduates provides 60-80% higher income than the temporary employment of the undiluted.

In the latter study, the school year-2022/2023. More than half (56%) of students in the 12th grade are trained in the largest five professional fields and profiles. Traditionally, the largest remains a profile of « foreign languages », followed by the « Technique » region. Nearly one third of the students in the 12th grade are enrolled in them, but their dynamics are different-the foreign languages profile increased its share to 20% in 2022/2023 academic year from 18% five years earlier, and « technique » shrinks from 15% to 12%.
