Choosing a free personality

On the cover of the book, a young woman smiles from old photography, who, like thousands of her peers born in the interwar period, could simply come to terms with the fact that « Lithuania’s old ones were no longer, Lithuania – LSSR ».

Only they were not satisfied with such a change in their homeland, because the family of Antanas and Barbora Šilauskas from Rūdaičiai, Kretinga district, was « religious and determined to patriotically ». Jadwiga grew up.

Therefore, it is not surprising that in the post -war period, after the second Soviet occupation, she joined the resistance.

Thus, the uncomfortable personality of the new government quickly « got angry » and was imprisoned to prevent « creating a bright communist tomorrow. »

As a gymnast, Jadvyga joined the future organization, and after the occupation of Lithuania, he decided to join the ranks of the Soviet occupiers.

« There was a Narimantas company in the area, which was then significantly lost by the Soviets. Gymnastics had a connection with guerrillas and, on February 16, 1948, the day of the restoration of the Lithuanian state, a group of students, including Jadwiga, swore to » act in freedom without a weapon.  » They allowed an anti -Soviet newspaper, distributed another literature, and acted as partisan liaison. The security guards quickly clarified them. Jadwig, who participated in the Spartakiad, arrested and kept the Klaipėda Soviet Security building on the present S. Neris Street. Right is also in Klaipeda. The punishment is terrible – 25 years of camp and 5 years of exile, ”said R. Sakalauskaitė.

Imprisoned with K. Vasiliauskas

« She was imprisoned in Komi with Monsignor Kazimieras Vasiliauskas, who I wrote about the book too. At that time, I learned a lot about women’s lives in Soviet camps, their desire to lighten, about Lithuanian support. Lithuanians even wanted to be charming, beautiful.

Asked how this book came up, the author mentioned that Jadwiga’s son Žilvinas kept his friend and poet Vytautas Rubavičius to his friend that his mom, whose mother’s fate is extremely exclusive, was not written.

« When I had time, I kept going to the archive of the Museum of Occupation and Freedom Fight to turn its case. Then I discovered its pink from the first camp. His photography was also adorned with a book cover. Doronina-Lasmane from Latvia, which, as it turned out, are both alive, ”said R. Sakalauskaitė.

Chamomile met both of them. Their memories of the camp and Jadwig added a book.

Of such small chips, the whole picture of the exclusive daughter of Lithuania was made.

« Jadwiga’s son Žilvinas (now dead) brought me another mother’s archive. I found sketches and drawings painted by Jadwiga among many documents. If her fate had been different, she would have become a great artist.

The experiences of people who endured Soviet terror are equivalent to disaster.

After starting to collect the material, R. Sakalauskaitė went to J. Bieliauskienė’s birthplace – Rūdaičiai, discovered a former teacher who led the ethnographic circle, and she showed the investigators evaluations of Jadwiga’s sister A. Smetona’s primary school.

« Then he managed to find Valeria, a 97 -year -old Valeria in Palanga, who, together with J. Bieliauskienė, attended the same school and told how the children behaved in interwar Lithuania, what formed their thinking, what they learned, what patriotic upbringing was.

A short episode of freedom

As Jadwig’s resting for 8 years, the way to freedom unexpectedly opened.

She met Vytautas Beliauskas in the camp (then in the documents, writing her name, bureaucrats made a mistake and recorded « Bieliauskienė », this mistake and survived for life).

Jadwiga learned that in the event of a marriage, a man could guarantee his wife and release her.

« The Lithuanians in the camp were in contact with each other, writing letters to each other. Jadvyga met Vytautas. He was a photographer from a good family. He was sent to the camp for funny things. Political prisoners were not entitled to settle after the camp, ”said R. Sakalauskaitė.

According to the author of the book, as if they could have started living a quiet family life (especially the son was born), but not Jadwiga.

« The love for the homeland was stronger and it begins to distribute the ‘Chronicle of the Lithuanian Catholic Church’. Teaches children the living pink and begins to produce performances. And the security guards follow everything. And she is convicted a second time. This time it is sent to Mordovia, the only camp of women’s political prisoners in the Soviet Union, ”said the author of the book about J. Bieliauskienė.

The letter was greeted by R. Reagan

In 1983, Jadvyga was 54 when he was convicted of anti-Soviet activities for the second time.

The security guards could not come to terms with the fact that this strong woman had not broken.

“In the prison camp, the security guards sent Edita Brutiene, who was forced to spy on the family, because they were blackmailing for the family. Her husband traded items brought by Klaipeda sailors from abroad, which was illegal at the time. While rescuing her husband, she came to the camp to have the « eyes and ears » of security guards. The prisoners quickly found out and kept it away from it, ”said R. Sakalauskaitė.

Jadwiga continued to stop.

He sent letters to various human rights conferences, international organizations, and became interested in the affairs of the world, and learned that Ronald Reagan had been elected President of the United States again.

« Political prisoners decided to congratulate Reagan on the occasion of the second election to the US presidency. Her buddy advised Jadwiga to write that greeting because she writes very beautiful. The greeting was written on cigarette paper, folded it to a tiny leaf. He carried him to the US Embassy and the second day after Mr Reagan’s election prisoners were lying on the table and printed in Baltimore Sun. Žilvinas Beliauskas was invited to the KGB in Vilnius with claims that his mother was greeted by R. Reagan, ”said R. Sakalauskaitė.

After this event, a terrible terror began in the camp.

And J. Bieliauskienė decided to give the vows of silence, even knowing that she was risking not getting food and being in a coder.

« Nobody spoke about it about it. She decided to remain silent for a year and pray for her enemies, » said R. Sakalauskaitė.

« Like any deed, just the eloquent silence that testifies to the unmistakable fortune of the spirit. That silence not only has been constantly humiliated by the caretakers, driving them crazy – » what’s going on « , » you can’t deal with this female « , » what she thinks  » – Those with all the power of violence and violence in their hands failed to break it. She resisted, ”wrote V. Rubavičius on the back of the cover of J. Bieliauskienė.

“Young generations must know”

Nijolė Sadūnaitė (1938-2024) was prisoner in the same camp.

They and Jadwiga were good friends and then actively acted in the January 13 organization after the restoration of independence.

1990 On March 11, when the restoration of Lithuania’s independence was announced, J. Bieliauskienė was the woman in national costumes, who presented Vytautas Landsbergis to the Chairman of the Supreme Council (AT), preserved in the Supreme Council (AT).

She then told about her vision from the camp, where she saw Lithuanian freedom and Vytis.

True, there were then -reasoning that a « bobel that talks about dreams » appeared.

« Many have just learned tolerance, and did not understand the words that could express the camp experience. There were no studies that analyze the purpose of the totalitarian system » change, recycle a person, to produce a qualitatively different consciousness.  » The experiences of the people who endured the Soviet terror are equivalent to disaster, ”wrote R. Sakalauskaitė in her book about J. Bieliauskienė.

The author of the book regretted that such a lasting woman in Lithuania is almost unknown to anyone, although she should be proud.

« Young generations need to know who that grandmother with national clothes and a scarf. She went to March 11th. Her name should be in school programs, » Landsbergis’ note, the book « Vow, love, regret. The life of J. Bieliauskienė » on the back.
