According to the files gathered in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance, two young men entered the store on May 6. They were Tadeusz K. and Mieczysław J., who were under the influence of alcohol. A moment earlier they consumed vodka in the area of the Vilnius stationand when they ran out of money, they decided that they would solve the problem, Using weapons obtained during an earlier robbery.
Mieczysław J. used a gun, aiming him at a 26-year-old saleswoman Irena Rokicińska, and Tadeusz K. emptied the money at that time. At some point, a resident of a neighboring building appeared under the store, but she withdrew when she noticed that the door was closed. She thought there was some control. Rokicińska called her, asking for supportwhich prompted the attacker to shoot, which turned out to be fatal. In the investigation He explained that it happened accidentallyas a result of a contraction caused by the door hitting the elbow
As the press said the next day, The capture of the perpetrators was difficult because they had a firearm with them. Shortly after escaping from the store, two partners who stood in chats joined. All four managed to slip away from the scene.
Searching for attackers and paramonary myth
Militia officers conducted an intensive investigation, but Only in February of the following year the perpetrators of the attack were detained. In the meantime, Warsaw electrified reports of a different wave of crimes related to Jerzy Paramonów, responsible for the murder of a MO officer and a series of robberies.
In the opinion of some residents of Prague It was Paramonow that was supposed to stand behind the attachment of the store, After years, journalist and writer Wojciech Piotr Kwiatek recalled. In his opinion, at that time, the term « bandit » was enough to explain the whole event and attribute them to the character about which numerous rumors circled. When paramonic was taken, the sentence was quickly passed – On November 8, 1955, he was sentenced to death, And less than two weeks later, execution was carried out in prison at ul. Rakowiecka.
Harsh penalties and would -be commemoration
In mid -June 1956, the Voivodship Court in Warsaw ruled the highest sentence towards Mieczysław J., And Tadeusz K. and Mirosław S. received 10 years in prison. The youngest perpetrator, 15-year-old at the time of robbery, Zbigniew P., went to a correctional facility. In September of the same year, the Supreme Court softened the death penalty until life imprisonment, as a result of which Mieczysław J. left the prison after 19 years.
Irena Rokicińska, living before her death at ul. Targowa, she was immediately honored with the Golden Cross of Merit. Her work was already appreciated, which was confirmed by the diploma awarded in 1954. In addition, her attitude during the robbery was emphasized. « Next to the drawer, from which the hand of Kotliński’s bandit took PLN 1,000 300, she kept PLN 2,000 800 from the reservoir, but despite the threats of the attackers did not reveal the place of storage of money. The court came to the conclusion that it should be sanctified with her name one of the major socialized trade facilities and therefore decided: he decided: Apply to the Presidium of the Government of the Polish People’s Republic for granting the Universal Promotine House in Prague in Warsaw the name of Irena Rokicińska » – the court wrote in a special decision.
However, the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic did not accept this concept and PDT Prague did not receive her name. In 1997, the building underwent a thorough modernization, gaining the new name « Rainbow Center ». He is currently known mainly as the seat of the local tax office.
In 1957, a plaque was suspended at the entrance to the unlucky store commemorating Rokicińska’s tragic death, from which you can learn that she defended social good while performing official duties. Today it is slightly blurred, but still reminds of the dramatic incident from the 1950s.
