A remarkable collection of German war memorials
Hlynur Lind Leifsson has collected German war memorials since World War II for years. « I collect these items with the preservation value in mind, » says the Borgnesingur in Hafnarfjordur.
Hlyn’s interest in the warfare started in childhood. « I was just a little bag of playing with plastic shuttles, » he recalls. « The green men were Americans, the British were light green, the Russians edges and the Germans gray.
Although few things take up a lot of space, the home had become too small for the museum, so Hlynur decided to create a special space for it. Every single thing is carefully registered with information on origin, important dates and costs. Sometimes a photo shows the object in use. « The family, the woman and the three children, is number one and the paid work number two, but then this hobby comes. A lot of work is involved and it costs it. »
Missing a collection for the public
Hlynur played basketball with Skallagrim in the 1990s, but the German war memorials are now the main hobby. He has acquired a great deal of information on the subject and points out that many should be taken care of. « Respirations of German war memorials are more than all other imitations, » he states, emphasizing the importance of analyzing things correctly. « I and more collectors are of great need for having no serious war museum in the capital area. The situation in this country is such that there are mostly individuals who care to preserve the Second World War. »
The hobby comes with a great deal and Hlynur encourages young people to pay attention to this. « This is a fun and interesting hobby. Everyone can start collecting because the supply is a lot and many things don’t cost much. »
The items are primarily advertised for sale online and then it is all about knowing the difference between right and wrong. Hlynur claims only to buy original things and he looks widely prisoners. He has met people with the same interests around the world and they often compare their books. « That said, not many people have this hobby and some fear coming out of the collection cabinet because of the risk of being involved in politics or some ideals associated with the collection. My interest is of a historical nature. »
It is worth noting that there is a lot of German war memorials in the United States. Hlynur says that US troops have often brought a considerable amount of such souvenirs and various things have been found and still found in the West. « You can’t buy everything that the mind desires and it is important to find good things at good prices, » he says. He regularly goes abroad to try to make a good purchase, and relatives and friends are good -natured to catch things on the outside.
Things shed light on World War II and Saga is behind each item. Hlynur emphasizes that the warnings preserve the story and for that the game is made. « For example, I think the helmets I have very remarkable, » he says. He also mentions various documents, costumes and medals. « The museum has been in boxes for almost a year, but now I am putting this in a permanent place so I and select guests can enjoy it. »
