A number of visitors opened with cancer / day for several visitors to the moles test campaign
During the campaign, on May 10, residents were able to check their moles free of charge at Esplanade. During the day, moles were tested for 323 people. Three melanomas, 14 basal cell carcinomas, one dysplastic nevus and 14 actinic keratoses were discovered.
According to the center, regular moles test – at least once a year at a dermatologist – can help detect malignant changes at the very beginning, when treatment is simpler, more effective and less traumatic. Similarly, diagnosis was also made in a timely manner that neither complicated surgical intervention or other therapy is required.
Skin malignancies, including skin melanoma, are the most common malignancies in Latvia. The campaign organizers point out that a large part of the country’s population corresponds to the risk factors.
People at risk are exposed to light skin, those with frequent sunburns, especially in childhood, people with a large number of moles, relatively large moles with irregular borders, uneven surfaces, and those whose relatives have the disease. At a high risk of melanoma, those who have another skin tumor – basalioma or squamous cell cancer.
In 2023, 263 cases of skin melanoma and 1386 cases of other malignancies were recorded, the campaign organizers said, referring to the data of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control. 113 people from skin cancer, on the other hand, died 68 of malignant melanoma and 45 of other malignant skin tumors. Most often people over the age of 50 are suffering from skin cancer.
Skin tumors tend to look very different visually, and the person cannot determine whether it is benign or malignant, said « Health Center 4 » dermatologist Julia Dexne, indicating the meaning of screening. Often during screening, melanoma is detected at an early stage, and treatment ends with surgery without additional treatment.
