Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom from the South Pacific, consisting of over 170 islands. The earthquake hit about 90 kilometers southeast of the city of Pangai, a city of about 2,000 inhabitants, and northeast of Nuku’Alofa, the capital and the most populated city of the country, with about 27,600 inhabitants. Tonga has a population of 106,000 inhabitants.

Tonga is located in the so-called Pacific fire ring, one of the most active areas on the planet, where earthquakes of different intensities occur daily.
