A new minority government will rule Portugal

The « Democratic Alliance » – a coalition of right -wing and centrist parties, led by Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, won the early elections on Sunday.

According to the results of the vote, the Democratic Alliance coalition has received almost 33% of the vote and has increased its seats in parliament to at least 89. This is the third early vote in the last three years in Portugal.

The winner coalition failed to provide a majority, which means that the Prime Minister will lead a minority government.

Democratic Alliance leader Luis Montenegro said he was open to political deals with opposition parties.

« We must all be able to talk to each other and put the national interest in the first place, » he told his supporters on election night.

The far-right party « fades » (« enough ») won at least 58 seats in parliament. The Socialists achieved perhaps their worst result since 1987, leveling on the spot with the far right. Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos has announced that he is resigning.

Tired of elections, Portuguese voted today with the hope of just a stable government

The current election was triggered by a no-confidence vote that parliament adopted in March against the Montenegro Government (leader of the Central-Right-Center Social Democratic Party). It was challenged by suspicions of conflict of interest of Prime Minister Montenegro, which he denied but resigned.

The scandal surrounding Montenegro was triggered by a consulting firm of his family, which has concluded contracts with private companies. According to the opposition, they benefited the prime minister.
